The Miners trophy for Underall Champion was conceived by Graeme Jenkins (Beachbuggy) from Tauranga in 1974. Beachbuggy donated the authentic miners helmet which is presented to the crew that executes the most spectacular capsize during a race. Capsizing by nosediving gains extra points and this, combined with capsizing consistency, wins the (Underall) contest trophy.

The Miners trophy is regarded by many as the most prestigious trophy of the championship as it is awarded to those that uphold the real tradition of 12 ft. skiffs. You will notice that many Interdominion winners have also won the Miners.
