New Zealand skiff Nuplex, sailed by Alex Vallings and Jeremy Smith won the 49th Interdominion, held from Worser Bay Boating Club in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Nuplex crew took out the Silasec trophy in convincing fashion, winning 7 out of the 10 races.
The Australian crew of Brett Hobson and Alex Johnson sailing Garde finished 2nd overall, with another New Zealand crew, Martin Hughes (Chris Skinner and David Healy) in 3rd.
The Kiwi team retained the John Brooke Team trophy, also convincingly, proving just to strong through their mid fleet for the Australian team.
Windy Wellington certainly lived up to its reputation during the regatta, even though heat 1 was sailed in a 10knot northerly, with most skiffs opting for there big rigs.
Martin Hughes took out the first heat leading almost start to finish, setting the pace for the rest of the regatta.
The same afternoon saw heat 2 held and the breeze build to almost 3rd rig for most skiffs, this heat would be the first stamp on the regatta by the Nuplex crew. Hamish Hey and Mick Candy sailing Nice Action Too showed form in there new skiff, picking up a 3rd place.
The northerly breeze built for heats 3 and 4 on day 2 of the regatta, most skiffs electing to use there 3rd rigs for the 20-25knots of breeze. Nuplex won both races, but were troubled in heat 3 by kiwi crew Romulus (Stephen Hogg and Roger Barnes) taking out 2nd, and by Garde in heat 4, winning by a mere 3 seconds.
Wellington turned on a chilly 30+knot southerly for Heat 5 on new years eve, leaving all crews with no choice but to use their smallest possible rigs.
Michael bochner and Tim Barraclough sailing Gizmo took an early lead, but missed the bottom mark and continued to sail down the harbour. A majority of skiffs followed suit, until Nuplex and Garde found the mark, rounded it and continued on their way around the proper course. From then on Nuplex were only challenged once for the race lead by Garde, who set her spinnaker on the 2nd downwind run, when Nuplex opted not to. Garde looked set to take the lead but capsized at the bottom mark, then had to hold off a charging Gobsmack Dwarfs sailed by Paul O’Maley-Jones and Richard Billet to remain in 2nd.
Heat 6 was sailed in a 25knot northerly and saw Nuplex extend their lead in the championship with another victory. Martin Hughes threw down a challenge for a podium finish, taking out 2nd, with Gobsmack dwarfs beginning to show consistency finishing third place.
The northerly continued to build throughout the day and with a Gale Warning issued by the Wellington Met-Services for the afternoon, heat 7 was postponed.
The Northerly continued to blow the following day and the race committee were again called to action abondoning all races for the day.
All the crews would get their layday early, and headed to a nearby Go-Kart track for more Aussie v Kiwi action. However it was the Queensland team that took out the race after some lap deduction penalties were issues to a very fast on track Kiwi team.
The crews were presented with another cold southerly for the second last day of competition, which would see the re-sail of heats 7 and 8. Second rigs were the order of the day as the breeze gusted to 18-20knots. Heat 7 was dominated by Martin Hughes to keep them in the race for an overall podium finish, with Garde 2nd and Nuplex 3rd .
The breeze didn’t change for heat 8 later that day, though there was some talk of it dying out which had some crews thinking of changing to big rig.
Nuplex got out to a great start followed by Inspire Group (Shaun Sheldrake and Craig Anderson), who’s chase ended with a capsize at the bottom mark the first time, and was picked up by Garde. Garde were able to peg Nuplex back on the downwind legs, but could not match the kiwi teams upwind speed, the boats would finish as they were with Inspire Group holding on for 3rd.
The final day of competition would see the breeze back into the north and build as the day progressed. Heat 9 was a comfortable 2nd rig 15-18knots, some close racing and lead changes early on prevailed. Nuplex looked set to record another victory from Garde, Gobsmack Dwarves and Dimension Polyant (Simon Ganley and Rod Chave), when the race was shortened by a lap and left many crews, and the race committee, confused as to the procedure. Garde rounded the bottom mark first after Nuplex capsized during a kite drop, but it was Gobsmack Dwarves who took a punt at going directly to the finish that would hand them the victory.
Most crews changed down to 3rd rigs for the final heat. Nuplex stamped complete domination on the regatta by again taking victory, but this time the close contender, and leader for most of the race, was Gizmo, who only lost the lead down the last run. Martin Hughes wrapped up their regatta with a 3rd place today leaving them 3rd overall. Garde were 4th which sealed 2nd place Overall.
The Underall Miners award went to Australian crew Dipolar Software (Ed Blackman and Paul Carpenter).
Special mention must go to Worser Bay Boating Club and the Wellington sailors for hosting the regatta, as well as PRO Matt Stechman who did a fantastic job and ensured the regatta was successful.
