The rain cleared and a light South Easter trickled down the harbour for the second round of the Garde Sydney Harbour Sprint Series on Sunday.
Coming into the days racing Garde (Brett Hobson and Alex Johnson) were leading the fleet, with O (Jono Temple and Richard Jones) 2nd and Gemmell Sails (Murray Press and Ben Gemmell) 3rd.
The course location also allowed for excellent viewing from Cremorne point reserve, as well as the spectator ferry.
There were a number of surprises that hit the 12 fleet on what turned out to be a beautiful days sailing.
Surprise number one hit the boat park about 20 minutes before we needed to hit the water. The breeze had switched around with boats in the park half rigged and this sent a couple of boats for second rigs but big rig would prove right on the day.
One of the boats who never considered changing down to second rig was Brett Hobson on Garde. With crew Alex Johnson injured, Interdominion winning crew Brad Yabsley stepped on board the series leader.
Surprise number two was the location of the top mark. The changing breeze and a couple of other fleets saw the top mark placed closer to the start than usual.
It was so close in fact that half the fleet were surprised to see the boat in front of them go around it. Also, surprising more than a few was the gun for the first race, with much of the fleet appearing to miss it.
Gizmo (Michael Bochner and Tim Barraclough) got the early jump on the fleet in race 1 but like others, found they needed all there wits to negotiate the short course. Lay-lines (and gates) approached far quicker than normal, meaning crew work was tested.
Gizmo would be beaten by a charging O for line honours in race 1, with Gemmell Sails 3rd, and Thistle Hill Wines (Matt Killoran and Richard Johns) 4th.
Race 2 got underway and would see the breeze swing further to the East. This time it was Gemmell Sails that got the best of it, taking the victory from Gizmo. O finished 3rd, putting pressure on a struggling Garde, who were unable to find a place on the podium in the first 2 races. Gemmell Sails were also closing the gap and were shortening in favouritism as the breeze backed off.
Of special mention, At Call Powered by Bainbridge (Andrew Stevenson and Brad Greenrod) snuck in for 4th and gave the leaders a good shake up.
Race 3 saw the breeze steady and O jump out to a comfortable lead from Gemmell Sails. The pair now trading blows to take out the round and possible the overall victory, Garde again failing to make an impression, finishing only 3rd place in race 3.
With the leaders completing each race in just over 15 minutes, a 4th race was called and the result would go down to the wire. Gemmell Sails did all they could by taking victory in the final race, but with Garde finishing 6th, O’s 2nd place was enough for them to secure the overall victory. Gizmo placed 4th in the final race, and along with some average points for redress from round 1, placed them 3rd overall. At Call Powered by Bainbridge continued there stellar day finishing 3rd in the last.
Dipolar Software (Ed Blackman and Paul Carpenter) took out the overall handicap from Gemmell Sails and Thistle Hill Wines.
